Celebrating the AAUP’s Centennial

Dear Colleague,

As you get ready to head off for winter break, we wanted to let you know about three special events occurring early in the new year. If you are planning to be at the January conventions of the American Historical Association, the Modern Language Association, or the Association of American Colleges and Universities, please join us for these events marking our 100th birthday!

January 2, 2015, American Historical Association, New York:

“The American Association of University Professors at 100: A Century of Activity in Defense of Academic Freedom,” will include presentations on the AAUP’s history over the past one hundred years by Hans-Joerg Tiede (Illinois Wesleyan University), Ellen Schrecker (Yeshiva University), and Henry Reichman (California State University, East Bay). Joan Scott (Institute for Advanced Study) and Clyde Barrow (University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley) will be commentators. New York Hilton, Nassau Suite A, 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Afterwards, please join us for a reception in Honor of the AAUP Centennial at the New York Hilton from 6:00-8:00 p.m in the Rendezvous Trianon ballroom.

The Johns Hopkins University Press will have a table at the AHA’s annual meeting where the newly released eleventh edition of AAUP’s Policy Documents & Reports (known as the Redbook) will be available for purchase.

January 8, 2015, Modern Language Association, Vancouver:

”There's a Policy for That: Protecting Your Academic Rights” will feature a discussion of recent AAUP policies on contingent faculty positions, program discontinuance, sexual harassment, and intellectual property with Michael Bérubé (Penn State University), Gwendolyn Bradley (AAUP National Office), and Donna L. Potts (Washington State University). VCC West (Vancouver Convention Centre), 112, 1:45–3:00 p.m.

The Johns Hopkins University Press will also have a table at the MLA’s annual convention where the AAUP’s eleventh edition Redbook will be available for purchase.

January 22, 2015, Association of American Colleges & Universities, Washington DC:

“The 1940 AAUP/AAC&U Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure Today” will feature Julie Schmid ( AAUP Executive Director), Hans-Joerg Tiede (Illinois Wesleyan University), Risa Lieberwitz (Cornell University), and David Kociemba (Emerson College).
