Call for Nominations

Are you passionate about higher education and the AAUP’s core principles of academic freedom and shared governance? Concerned about the erosion of tenured appointments and the future of the profession? And do you have time and talent to dedicate to ensuring that the faculty’s voice is heard in debates about these issues?

If so, or if you have a colleague who fits the bill, we urge you to nominate yourself or a colleague as a candidate for national office or for the national AAUP Council, the Association’s governing body. The Council is responsible for overseeing the affairs of the Association, including setting dues, overseeing finances, establishing standing committees, and promoting the exchange of ideas among the membership, the leadership, and the staff. The Council generally meets in person twice a year in Washington, DC; between meetings, it conducts business via frequent e-mail discussions and conference calls.

All members of the Association in good standing, with the exception of associate members, are eligible to be elected to officer and Council positions and to nominate other eligible members. The committee seeks a diverse group of candidates with experience in the AAUP at the local, state, or national level.

Four offices are open for election to two-year terms: president, first vice-president, second vice-president, and secretary-treasurer.

Ten Council positions are open for election:

  • Three at-large Council positions (two are for four-year terms; one is for a two-year term)
  • One Council position in each of these geographical districts:
  • I (Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah)
  • III (Michigan)
  • IV (Arkansas, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, Virginia)
  • VI (Ohio)
  • VII (New Jersey)
  • IX (Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont)
  • X (Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island)
In accordance with recently approved amendments to the AAUP Constitution, seats in Districts I, IV, VII, and X are for two-year terms, and seats in Districts III, VI, and IX are for four-year terms.

To nominate yourself or another eligible member to an officer or Council position, you must submit the following information to the Nominating Committee by December 14, 2013:
  1. The position for which the individual is being nominated.
  2. The name, institution, and e-mail address of the individual being nominated.
  3. The name, institution, and e-mail address of the individual making the nomination (if not self-nominating).
  4. If nominating for an at-large seat, whether the nomination is for a two-year or a four-year term.
  5. Endorsements by letter and/or e-mail message from six AAUP members (one of whom may be the nominee), citing the specific position for which the individual is being endorsed and the name, institutional affiliation, and e-mail address of the endorser.
To ensure that all six endorsements arrive by the December 14 deadline, we encourage potential candidates (or those acting on their behalf) to collect and submit them together in one letter or e-mail message.

Nominating petitions must be received in the AAUP’s national office by Saturday, December 14, 2013. The Nominating Committee shall submit its final report to the Council by December 21. All proposed nominees who meet the eligibility requirements will have their names included on the ballot for the national Council elections in spring 2014.
