AAUP Bulletin

I’m pleased to announce the publication of the 2011 Bulletin of the American Association of University Professors, in which readers will find reports on violations of standards of academic freedom at Bethune-Cookman University in Florida and at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge; reports on departures from principles and standards of shared governance at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and at Idaho State University; subcommittee reports on Partner Accommodations and Dual-Career Appointments and on Ensuring Academic Freedom in Politically Controversial Academic Personnel Decisions; the annual reports of the AAUP’s Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure and its Committee on College and University Governance; the records of the November 2010 and June 2011 meetings of our governing Council; and current lists of our elected officers, Council members, and members of standing committees.

When the AAUP was founded in 1915, it began publishing reports and other official documents in its journal of record, the Bulletin of the American Association of University Professors. The first year’s issues contained John Dewey’s inaugural presidential address; the report of the AAUP’s first investigation, at the University of Utah; news of other 1915 investigations at the University of Colorado, Wesleyan University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Montana; and the foundational 1915 Declaration of Principles on Academic Freedom and Academic Tenure. In the ensuing ninety-five years, the Bulletin evolved into Academe, the Association’s magazine, which combined official content with feature articles. So that we can both take advantage of the timeliness of online publishing and preserve a printed historical record, since 2010 reports are published on the AAUP’s website as soon as they are ready and are also gathered in a single printed volume which is published in September and sent to subscribers with the September-October issue of Academe.
